Letter Grade Calculator

Type a score to get its letter, or pick a letter to get the score range it covers. Either box fills the other.

5% reaches the F cutoff of 0% but not the band above it, so it is an F (the band runs 0% to 59.99%).
Worth 0 grade points on the scale below.

Schools do not agree on this. Untick a letter your school does not award, or change any cutoff and points value to match your handbook.

85% is a B. So is 83. On a plus/minus scale, 87 is a B+ and 82 is a B-. If you just need the letter for one number, that's the answer. This letter grade calculator does the conversion for any percentage or raw score (like 47/55), on a standard scale, a plus/minus scale, or your teacher's custom one, and shows the GPA points too.

How to use it

Type a percentage, or type points earned and points possible. Choose the scale. You'll see the letter and its value on a 4.0 scale.

Example: 47 out of 55 on a chemistry exam. 47 ÷ 55 = 85.45%. On plus/minus, that's a B worth 3.0. On a 7-point scale, where many districts put the B cutoff at 85, you'd be holding on by less than half a point.

The scale most US schools start from

Letter Percent GPA points
A+ 97–100 4.0
A 93–96 4.0
A- 90–92 3.7
B+ 87–89 3.3
B 83–86 3.0
B- 80–82 2.7
C+ 77–79 2.3
C 73–76 2.0
C- 70–72 1.7
D+ 67–69 1.3
D 65–66 1.0
F below 65 0.0

Treat it as a default. Some schools give A+ a 4.3. Some set D at 60–69 with no D+ or D-. That's the whole reason the custom option exists.

How the conversion actually works

Get a percentage first, (earned ÷ possible) × 100, then find the band it falls in. A letter grade is only a label for a range. Starting from several weighted categories instead of one score? Get the overall percentage with the grade percentage calculator, then bring it back here.

Little things that matter

Rounding is a policy. 89.5 becomes 90 in some classes and stays 89 in others. It's a fair question to ask on day one.

Plus/minus might not reach your GPA. Some schools print B+ on report cards but count it as a flat B in the GPA. When you work out your GPA, use your school's point values. Our post on how to calculate grades to GPA goes through that conversion line by line.

A B+ isn't 3.3 everywhere. A few schools use 3.33 or 3.5.

Other countries don't map neatly. A UK 2:1, an IB 6 and a Philippine 1.25 aren't A, B or C in any official way. For Philippine grades there's a separate GWA to GPA converter.

Converting a whole gradebook at once

Teachers sometimes need to convert a full column of percentages into letters for a report card. Set your custom scale once, then run each score through. Faster than eyeballing a chart, and you won't accidentally mark an 86.9 as a B+ when your scale says B.

Students can do the same with a semester's worth of grades to see their letters before transcripts update. If two or three are hovering near a cutoff, that's useful to know early.

One more thing: always confirm if your teacher uses "at least 90" or "above 90" for an A-. It sounds trivial. On a 90.0, it isn't.

Frequently asked questions

What letter is 85%?

A B on almost every US scale, worth 3.0 GPA points on plus/minus.

Is an 89.5 an A- or a B+?

Depends on rounding. Round to the nearest whole number and it's a 90, an A-. Otherwise it's a B+.

What's a 7-point grading scale?

A stricter scale where an A starts around 93, a B at 85, and a C at 77, instead of 90/80/70.

Can I use my teacher's cutoffs?

Yes. Choose custom and type the lowest percent for each letter.
