In the Philippines, a 1.00 is the best grade you can get and 5.00 is failing. Abroad, a 4.0 is the top. So when a scholarship form or a grad school in Canada asks for your "GPA", you need two steps: compute your GWA, then convert it. This GWA to GPA calculator does both.
Step one: your GWA
Enter each subject's final grade on your school's scale (1.00 high, 3.00 usually the lowest pass, 5.00 failing) and its units.
| Subject | Grade | Units | Grade × Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus | 1.25 | 3 | 3.75 |
| Physics | 1.75 | 3 | 5.25 |
| Filipino | 2.00 | 2 | 4.00 |
| PE | 1.50 | 1 | 1.50 |
14.50 ÷ 9 units = 1.61 GWA.
GWA = Σ (grade × units) ÷ Σ units
Same idea as a GPA, just upside down. Units do the weighting, so a 1.25 in a 5-unit major helps you far more than a 1.00 in 1-unit PE.
Step two: the conversion
Here's the honest part. There's no single official GWA-to-GPA table. Universities and evaluators like WES each have their own. This mapping is common:
| GWA | GPA (4.0) | Rough letter |
|---|---|---|
| 1.00 | 4.0 | A |
| 1.25 | 3.7 | A- |
| 1.50 | 3.3 | B+ |
| 1.75 | 3.0 | B |
| 2.00 | 2.7 | B- |
| 2.25 | 2.3 | C+ |
| 2.50 | 2.0 | C |
| 2.75 | 1.7 | C- |
| 3.00 | 1.0 | D |
| 5.00 | 0.0 | F |
A 1.61 lands between 1.50 (3.3) and 1.75 (3.0), so think about 3.1 to 3.2. If a foreign school asks how your GPA was reported, our blog post on GPA scale reporting explains what they're looking for.
Things that mess up the number
Percent-based schools. Some schools grade 75 as passing instead of using 1.00–5.00. Convert those to your registrar's 1–5 scale before computing GWA.
INC and dropped subjects. Normally left out until resolved. Don't type 5.00 unless it actually became a failing grade.
NSTP and PE. Some schools exclude them from GWA for honors. Your student manual will say.
Latin honors. Cutoffs vary, but you'll often see around 1.00–1.20 for summa, 1.21–1.45 for magna, and 1.46–1.75 for cum laude.
Any converted GPA is an estimate. Official evaluations go by your transcript. Once you have a 4.0-scale number, you can build a full GPA course by course, or check how individual grades read as US letters with the letter grade calculator.
Keep your Transcript of Records open while you do this. From memory, a 1.75 has a funny way of turning into a 1.50.
When a form asks for both
Some applications want your GWA and a converted GPA, plus the scale you used. In that case, list your GWA exactly as it appears on your transcript, state the converted number as an estimate, and name the table or evaluator you used. Admissions offices see Philippine transcripts all the time. Being clear about how you converted is worth more than squeezing out an extra 0.1.
If a school requires a formal credential evaluation, don't bother arguing over tables at all. Send the transcript and let the evaluator convert it.
And if you're comparing yourself to classmates, compare GWA to GWA. Converted numbers from different tables won't line up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compute my GWA?
Multiply each grade by its units, add them, and divide by total units. 14.50 over 9 units is 1.61.
What's a 1.75 GWA in GPA?
Around 3.0, a B, on the common table. Other tables may put it a little higher or lower.
Is a lower GWA better?
Yes. 1.00 is the top grade in the Philippine system and 5.00 is failing.
Is there an official conversion?
No. Each university and evaluator uses its own table, so treat any conversion as an estimate.
What GWA do I need for cum laude?
At many schools, about 1.75 or better. Magna is often around 1.45 and summa around 1.20, but check your school.
