Parents, this page is partly for you. The portal shows a quarter grade, then an exam score, and suddenly the semester grade on the report card is something nobody expected. High school grades come in layers: assignments make the quarter, quarters and an exam make the semester, semesters make the year. This high school grade calculator walks through those layers.
How to use it
Choose what you're calculating: a quarter, a semester, or a full year. Enter each piece with its weight. A very common semester setup is Quarter 1 at 40%, Quarter 2 at 40%, and the exam at 20%. Type the percentages in, leaving the exam blank if it hasn't happened.
Example: Q1 = 88, Q2 = 91, exam = 79.
0.40 × 88 + 0.40 × 91 + 0.20 × 79 = 35.2 + 36.4 + 15.8 = 87.4%, a B+.
The exam cost a bit, but only a bit, since it's 20%. Had it been an 89, the semester would be 89.4. That close to an A-, it's fair to ask whether the school rounds.
How the math works
Semester grade = Q1 × w1 + Q2 × w2 + exam × w3
Schools set those weights their own way. 45/45/10 is common. Some skip semester exams and just average the quarters. A few weight Q2 heavier. Your handbook or the teacher's syllabus will say.
For a full year, many schools average the two semesters. Others use all four quarters plus two exams. If each quarter itself is built from categories like homework and tests, work it out first with the class grade calculator.
What catches families off guard
AP and honors don't change the percentage. A 91 in AP Chemistry is a 91. What changes is your weighted GPA, where that A might count as 5.0. Our blog post on calculating a weighted GPA explains how that bump works, and you can calculate your GPA here when the semester ends.
Exam exemptions. Some schools let A students skip the semester exam. Then it's just the two quarters averaged.
Rounding at every layer. If the quarters get rounded before averaging, the semester can come out a point off from your own math.
Credits. A full-year class is usually 1 credit, 0.5 per semester, and each semester often shows on the transcript separately.
Progress reports come late. By the time a D is printed, half the quarter is gone. Checking the portal every couple of weeks is boring, and it works.

For students eyeing college applications
Colleges usually see semester grades, not quarter grades, and many look hardest at sophomore and junior year. So the semester exam in a junior-year class carries more weight for you than its 20% suggests.
If a semester is sitting at 89.2 going into the exam, that's worth some real preparation. An A- on the transcript and a B+ look different on an application, even when the gap was half a point.
On the flip side, don't panic over one low quarter. A 78 in Q1 followed by a 90 in Q2 and a solid exam can still finish near an 85. Run the numbers before you assume the worst.
Frequently asked questions
How is a high school semester grade calculated?
Multiply each quarter and the exam by their weights and add. On a 40/40/20 split, quarters of 88 and 91 with a 79 exam give 87.4%.
No semester exam at my school. Now what?
Then the semester is usually the average of the two quarters. 88 and 91 average to 89.5.
Do AP classes raise my grade percentage?
No, only your weighted GPA. The class grade itself stays the same.
How much is a semester exam worth?
Usually 10–20% of the semester, sometimes 25%. Check the handbook.
