College Grade Calculator
Estimate your college course grade with plus/minus cutoffs using this free grade calculator tool.
| Course Name | Letter Grade | Credits |

Quick version: take each part of the course from your syllabus, multiply your score by its weight, and add it all up. That's your college course grade. This college grade calculator does it with plus/minus letters and your professor's cutoffs, which matters more than people think when you're sitting at 82.6.
Using the calculator
College syllabi nearly always list weights. Find that section, then enter each component (labs, midterm, papers, final), its weight, and your score. Pick a grading scale, standard plus/minus or custom, and you'll get a percentage and a letter.
Here's a typical lab-science course:
| Component | Weight | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Labs | 15% | 88 |
| Midterm | 25% | 74 |
| Papers | 25% | 90 |
| Final exam | 35% | 81 |
0.15 × 88 = 13.2, 0.25 × 74 = 18.5, 0.25 × 90 = 22.5, 0.35 × 81 = 28.35. Total: 82.55%.
On most plus/minus scales that's a B-. At a school where B starts at 83, it's less than half a point short. About 1.3 more points on the final would have flipped it. Annoying, right?
The math
Course grade = Σ (component weight × component score)
If parts aren't graded yet, divide by the weights you've filled in to get where you stand now. Then take that letter to the GPA calculator with your credit hours. A B- in a 4-credit course pulls your GPA down more than the same B- in a 1-credit lab. Over a few years, all those courses roll into your cumulative GPA, which our blog covers in what a cumulative GPA is.
How college grading is different
Exams run the show. 60% or more of a course grade coming from exams is normal. Great homework won't save weak exams like it sometimes does in high school.
Curves exist, but ask how. Some professors curve each exam, some curve the final course grade, some don't curve at all.
Dropped scores are common. "Lowest quiz dropped" means you should take it out before averaging, or you'll underestimate yourself.
Participation isn't free points. 10% for attendance sounds easy until the flu takes out a week.
Cutoffs differ by department: 93/90/87 here, 94/90/87 there. The syllabus wins every argument.
And if the math says you can't pass even with a perfect final, look at the withdrawal deadline. A W usually looks better than an F. Talk to your advisor first, then check the what-if grade calculator to be sure.
Checking mid-semester
Right after the midterm is the best time to run this. Most of the course is still ahead, and you can see exactly how much room you have. In the example above, before the final was taken, the student had 54.2 points from 65% of the course, which is 83.4% so far. Knowing that, they'd have seen that roughly an 82.3 or better on the final keeps a B (where B starts at 83), and anything lower slips to a B-.
That's a much better place to study from than a vague feeling that things are "probably fine."
Also ask if your professor posts grades with or without the curve applied. It changes how you read the number.
Frequently asked questions
How is a college course grade calculated?
Multiply each component score by its syllabus weight and add them up. Labs 88 (15%), midterm 74 (25%), papers 90 (25%), final 81 (35%) gives 82.55%.
What percent is a B- in college?
Usually 80 to 82.99%, though some departments shift the cutoffs a point.
I failed the midterm. Can I still pass?
Often, yes. If the final is 35–50% of the grade, a strong final makes up a lot. Run the numbers in the what-if calculator.
How does a course grade affect my GPA?
By credit hours. A 4-credit course counts four times as much as a 1-credit course.
Do curves change my letter grade?
They can. A curve might raise your score or lower the cutoffs, so a raw 78 could still end up a B.
