Class Grade Calculator
Work out your current class grade from weighted categories with this free tool on our grade calculator site.
Every semester somebody shows me a portal that says their grade is a 56. It's week eight, they've been getting B's, and they're panicking. Nine times out of ten the portal is counting the final exam (which hasn't happened) as a zero. This class grade calculator fixes that. It works out your grade from what's actually been graded, using the weights in your syllabus.
What you need
Just the grading breakdown from your syllabus and your average in each category. Something like homework 25%, tests 40%, final 35%. Type each one in with its weight and your score. Anything not graded yet stays blank.
Example. Homework is 25% and you're averaging 95. Tests are 40% and you're at 81. The final is 35% and still a few weeks out.
- Homework: 0.25 × 95 = 23.75
- Tests: 0.40 × 81 = 32.40
That's 56.15 points so far. Now the important step: you've only been graded on 65% of the course, so divide by 0.65. 56.15 ÷ 0.65 = 86.4%. A solid B, not a 56.
The formula
Current grade = Σ (weight × score, graded categories only) ÷ Σ (graded weights)
Once the final is in and the weights hit 100%, that division stops mattering. Until then, skipping it is exactly how a B student ends up thinking they're failing.
The final can still move things a lot, though. With 35% left, a 70 on it lands you around 80.6. A 95 gets you to about 89.4. If you want the exact score for a target, plug the numbers into the what-if grade calculator. There's also a step-by-step post on what grade you need on your final if you'd rather see it done by hand.
Common slip-ups
Averaging inside a category by percentage when the teacher uses points. Three quizzes worth 10, 10 and 30 points don't average evenly. The 30-pointer counts three times as much.
Leaving missing work out. Put a missing assignment in as 0. It hurts, but it matches what the teacher sees.
Typing 25 instead of 0.25. The calculator handles percentages fine. It's when you check by hand that this one bites.
Assuming the letter. An 89.6 is an A- in some classes and a B+ in others. Your syllabus decides, or you can run it through the letter grade calculator to compare common scales.
If your class has no weights and just totals up points, the points-based grade calculator will match your gradebook better.
My actual advice? Check after every big test, not just at report-card time. A B- in week six is a fixable problem. In week fifteen it mostly isn't.
Doing it for more than one class
Most students check one class at a time, usually the one that's worrying them. Try doing all of them once a month instead. It takes maybe ten minutes with your syllabi open, and you end up with a short list: which classes are safe, which are close to a cutoff, and which need real attention.
That list tells you where study time goes. There's not much point grinding for a class sitting at 95 when another is at 79.6 and the final is worth 30%.
At the end of the term, take those letters and plug them into the GPA calculator. Then you'll know what the report card will say before it arrives.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out my current grade?
Multiply each graded category's score by its weight, add them, then divide by the total weight of just those categories.
Why does my portal show a lower grade than this?
Many gradebooks count ungraded work as zero, or drop scores and round differently. Enter the numbers here and compare.
Can I get my grade without the final?
Yes. Leave the final blank and the calculator scales what you have up to 100%.
How much can the final change my grade?
A final worth 35% can move you more than 10 points either way. One worth 10% barely nudges it.
Do empty categories count as zero?
Not here. They're left out until you enter a score, so they don't drag your grade down early.
How often should I check my class grade?
After every test or big assignment. It takes two minutes and it's the easiest way to catch a slide early.
