Final Grade Calculator
It's the last week of the semester and there's one question on your mind: what do I need on the final? Not a guess, not "probably a B", but the actual number. This final grade calculator gives it to you. Enter your current grade, the grade you want, and how much the final is worth, and it tells you the exact score you need.
It's one of several free tools on our grade calculator site, and it pairs well with the what-if grade calculator if you want to test a few different scenarios before exam day.
The formula behind it
Required final = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Example. You're sitting at 84% and the final is worth 25%. You want a 90 in the class. Multiply 84 by 0.75 to get 63. Subtract that from 90 to get 27. Divide by 0.25 and you need a 108 on the final. That's not happening without extra credit, so it's worth knowing now.
Lower the target to an 85 instead: 85 − 63 = 22, and 22 ÷ 0.25 = 88. Tough but realistic. And if you just want to keep a B (80)? You need a 68. Seeing all three numbers side by side is what helps you plan your study time.
That's exactly what the what-if grade calculator is for. Change the final score a few times and watch the course grade move, so you can see how much room you really have.
Getting an accurate answer
Start with the right current grade. Many school portals count the final as a zero until it's graded, which drags your number down. Work it out properly with the class grade calculator using only the categories that have been graded.
Know the real weight of the final. Check the syllabus. "The final is 20%" and "the exam category is 20%" aren't always the same thing, especially if a cumulative project is lumped in.
Watch the letter cutoffs. If your teacher rounds 89.5 up to an A, your target can be 89.5 rather than 90. The letter grade calculator shows how common scales handle that.
Check practice tests honestly. If you need an 88 and your practice exams are coming back at 75, that's useful information. Score them quickly with the test grade calculator and adjust your plan.
Don't forget outstanding assignments. A late project or last homework set can still shift your current grade. Run those through the assignment grade calculator first, then come back here.
When the number looks impossible
If the calculator says you need more than 100, it isn't broken. It means the target is out of reach on the final alone. Lower the target and run it again, ask your teacher about extra credit or dropped scores, or use the what-if grade calculator to find the highest grade you can still realistically reach.
And if the number is low, say you only need a 45 to keep your B, that's good news too. You can shift some study time to a class that needs it more. Once the grades are in, the GPA calculator shows how the semester affects your overall GPA.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Subtract current grade × (1 − final weight) from your target, then divide by the final weight. The calculator does this instantly.
What if I need over 100% on the final?
Your target can't be reached on the final alone. Try a lower target or ask about extra credit.
How much can a final exam change my grade?
It depends on weight. A final worth 30% can move your grade 10 points or more; one worth 10% only nudges it.
What's the difference between this and the what-if grade calculator?
This tool gives the one score you need for a target. The what-if calculator lets you try different scores and see the resulting course grade.
Is my portal grade accurate to use?
Not always. Some portals count ungraded work as zero. Check with the class grade calculator first.
